Gold Coast Seniors OntheNet is a computer club for seniors (over 55 years) who are interested in learning about computers and how to use them and their associated equipment, both for communication and entertainment.

We started in 1997 with a group of 14 computer enthusiastic seniors, anxious to improve their own skills, and ready to pass on their knowledge to others.  At first, State High School computers were used after school hours.  Cr. Dawn Crichlow and Gold Coast City Council assisted us with our current Administration and Tutorial rooms and we are indeed appreciative of the assistance we have received.

Our rooms are located at:

Suite 3, Gold Coast City Council  Chambers

47 Nerang Street, Southport, Queensland 4215

( Entrance in Davenport Street )

As a community based organization, we have a large and growing membership. Some seniors join up, learn what they need to know, and move on.  Others stay with us for many years, learning all the time and sharing the expertise they have developed.  Our current membership stands at just over 1000 members.

You do not need to own a computer to join, but you certainly need to have access to a computer.  If you can't manage this through family and friends, most Libraries have computers that can be accessed by the general public.

W e are a totally voluntary organization and there are no paid tutors or other staff.  The very small cost of lessons covers cost of photocopying of lesson hand-outs.  We offer regular instruction on most aspects of computers, e-mail messages, a wide range of computer programs including word processing and the Internet.  Funds received from membership fees are put towards facilities and amenities for our members, meeting venues and sound equipment, computers and associated hardware and software for tutorial rooms, We have 15 computers in our tutorial rooms, all connected to the Internet, and pupils can enjoy either group classes or one-to-one lessons with our volunteer tutors.  Members can learn at their own pace, there is no pressure to keep up or catch up with others.

Office hours are:

9.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Thursday

Telephone: (07) 5591 5766

E-mail address: sotnadmin@futureweb.com.au

Monthly meetings are held at Tamborine Mountain, Paradise Point and Burleigh Heads.  Events Calendar in the index will take you to the list of meetings and social functions.

The Bulletin Board has recently been introduced for members, and provides a great avenue for computer information, sought after advice, tips and hints.  We also provide links to many other organisations which can benefit our members (see Links in the index).

Gold Coast Seniors OntheNet provides a forum, a learning place and a social circle.  You can improve your quality of life in a changing world, you can communicate with your children and grandchildren at home and abroad, by e-mail and photographs, you can learn about other countries, plan your travel itineraries, the possibilities are endless.

Application Forms can be found on this website, click Membership in the index.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

AGED CARE FACILITY

Seniors helping seniors

One of the aims of Seniors OntheNet from the very beginning was to help those seniors who, for one reason or another, are confined to Aged Care Facilities .  We have installed computers into a number of Aged Care Facilities  and we provide volunteers to teach interested residents.

Residents have the excitement and fun of learning new skills through personal individual tuition.  Even if they don't want to get into understanding the technology, they can play games such as Solitaire.  Many of them learn to communicate with their loved ones via e-mail, and discover the entertainment and knowledge that the Internet can provide.

This is a very valuable service which is constantly, and a highly rewarding experience for our volunteer tutors.
